Implementing a patient-centered approach requires a commitment to change and a willingness to collaborate across all stakeholders. Based on our research, we offer the following recommendations for successfully integrating Patient Benefit into healthcare.
Key Recommendations

- Actively solicit input from patients, families, clinicians, payers, and policymakers to ensure that diverse voices are heard and considered.
- Establish advisory boards or workgroups to facilitate ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
- Balance Standardization & Flexibility
- Develop frameworks that preserve core principles of Patient Benefit while allowing for condition-specific and population-specific variations.
- Use standardized tools and methods where appropriate, but be flexible enough to adapt to individual patient needs and preferences.
- Address Equity & Access
- Ensure that data collection and analysis methods are equitable and representative of all populations, including underserved and marginalized communities.
- Address systemic barriers that prevent patients from accessing care or participating in research.
- Provide Robust Implementation Support
- Invest in training and resources to support clinicians and other healthcare professionals in implementing patient-centered practices.
